It’s time once again to reveal our Cosplay Babe of the Month. Please join us in welcoming Ms. September, all the way from Italy, Pamela Colnaghi. This is our second babe of the month hailing from the cosplay hotbed of Italy and we are considering booking tickets for Rome or Milan soon. Now as a few of you are aware the primary language in Italy is, wait for it, Italian. As such, the translation is not perfect in our interview but we think Pamela did a wonderful job with her English and we only hope we could do so well if interviewed in a language other than our own. With that said, let’s get started on part one of our two part feature with Ms. September and jump right into our first interview question.
Comics Ninja: Pamela, thank you for joining us today all the way from Italy. Why don’t you take the opportunity to introduce yourself to the Comics Ninja readers and tell us a little bit about yourself?
Pamela: Hello there! I’m glad to be here with you and to introduce myself to American cosplay and anime fans! As you know I’m from Italy, in the province of Milan. Since I was a child I always loved reading comics books like Mickey Mouse and the Disney stories. I watched daytime cartoons, particularly the Japanese animation which made me dream and hope one day I would be like my favorite t.v. heroines and their adventures. As most girls of my generation who grew up with Cramy Mami, Cat’s Eye, Orange Road and other characters they certainly have left their mark on me and the 80′s youth generation.
When I was 14 I bought my first manga book, it was the first copy of Sailor Moon and there began my passion for manga, anime and comic conventions! At the time I also went to art school so I often used draw manga stories oranime portraits. In my life, Art has been always a part of me, in all its meaning. Right now I work as Makeup Artist for a great Italian fashion house and in my spare time I love painting and draw. Sometimes I pose for my photographers friends for both cosplay or fashion/glamour shots.
Music is also an important part of my life; years ago I travelled all around Europe, especially in England, the cradle of the best music of all the time (but also the American sound is not so bad
) I attended festivals and many shows of my favorite band. It was a great experience for me that opened my mind to other streets of life and foreign friends! But the best thing to happen to me so far is becoming a mother. I have a little child, her name is Iris and she is my life. Although be a mum is very difficult and tiring, I still find the time to devote to my thousands of passions, including the cosplay modeling…
Comics Ninja: Wow, thank you for the in-depth background information. What first got you into cosplay?
Pamela: No one, just looking at some cosplayers dressed like Leiji Matsumoto’s heroes in Cartoomics 1999 and then looking for pics about cosplay around the net. At the time I went to comics con, cosplay was beginning to take hold in our country too. Six months later I decided to create a costume to wear for Lucca Comics and games, the most important convention here in Italy.
Comics Ninja: What was your first cosplay experience like?
Pamela: My first experience was in Lucca Comics 2000. The Tuscany city held the most important and biggest con of Italy every year. Faye Valentine was my first cosplay costume.
I was very scared haha, I didn’t have a wig and my shorts were terrible!!! At the time very few people were used to cosplaying so it was very strange for them, and half of them where laughing at us!!!
It was the beginning of 2000 and the very few people who were cosplaying were cosplaying as characters from Sailor Moon, Saint Seya, and Dragonball. Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop (you can see an exclusive photoshoot for Comics Ninja) is one of my favorite characters ever and sometimes I feel like her, so I chose her for my first outfit!
After this experience I decided to become a cosplay model. I’m one of the first Italian cosplay model and it’s an honor for me. Although there were several stops in my cosplay career (the big one from 2004 to 2010) it remains one of my top passion.
Comics Ninja: What is your favorite convention or event to attend?
Pamela: Honestly there are many beautiful cons in Italy, but I think that Lucca Comic and Games is the most important event. Every year is bigger and more interesting and the important thing is that it is located in the centre of the country, so it is easily accessible by all from the north to south of Italy. I will return this year after 7 years in Lucca and I’m planning two beautiful costumes because there is a special landscape for photoshooting. I can’t wait!!!
Comics Ninja: Have you ever attended a convention in the United States? Have you ever visited the U.S.? If so, what was your visit like?
Pamela: No way! I’m a European girl but I grew up with the American dream. When I was just a teenager I was always looking at Beverly Hills 90210, and the American way of life began to be a part of me. It was all so much bigger and more fun compared to Europe! Now I’m a woman and my favorite show is Sex and the City haha! I always dream about Carrie and friends’ adventures in the biggest city of the world, New York City.
I hope to have the possibility to visit the U.S. as soon as possible, New York, Miami and the Boston area and the beautiful landscapes in the center of U.S. are my top sites I must to visit absolutely. I don’t like a tourist vacation but instead adventuring, so you know the best part but also the worst, I need it to find inspirations for myself. I know that there are great shows like Comicon in the city of San Diego. I hope to join it one day, but now it is just a dream!
Comics Ninja: Before we head to the next question, the Ninja would just like to state that Beverly Hills 90210 may not have been, how do you say, an exact depiction of American life but that is a kind compliment nonetheless. Now back to the questions. It seems like there is a thriving cosplay scene in Italy. Are we just imagining that or is it as big as it seems?
Pamela: No, it’s real! Don’t forget that we’re geniuses in the art of fashion! The most important designers are Italian! And we ‘re known around the world for this ! Just a coincidence? I don’t know but the truth is that the level of cosplay is very high, sometimes works of art to be amazed at.
We won many important awards and this year we’re second winner of the world. This means that we’re good and original in the production of weapons and costumes. The important thing is to treat the dress, make up and hair in great detail, it doesn’t matter if the dress is easy or difficult, the best thing is that it is well cared for.
