Hello Ninja Nation, please join us in welcoming Ms. June 2011, Cosplay babe of the month: Claire Max. On top of providing us with her wonderful pictures, Claire has been gracious enough to sit down for an interview. Tonight’s post will be part one of a two part feature. With that said, let’s get right to it!
Comics Ninja: First, a little background. We understand that you currently live in the Pittsburg area. What is the cosplay scene like there?
Claire: There isn’t a whole lot of one, haha. I mostly travel out of state for conventions. Pittsburgh has a moderately-sized anime con and one fairly small comic con ever year. I stopped doing anime cosplay a few years ago, so I don’t attend the anime con so much anymore, but it was where I debuted my very first cosplay ever, in 2001, at the age of 14!
Comics Ninja: What regional or national conventions have you attended or do plan to attend in the near future?
Claire: I generally manage to get to two or three per year. This year, it’s Wondercon, San Diego Comic Con, and Dragoncon.
Comics Ninja: Nice choices. How did you first end up getting into cosplay and why?
Claire: When I was a freshman in high school, I met a girl in biology class. Up until that point I had no idea there were such things as cosplay or conventions, and she opened my eyes to this whole new world of geeky wonder. That year, Pittsburgh began it’s anime con, Tekkoshocon, and I made and wore my very first cosplay. It was Chloe, from the anime *Noir*, and I was so ridiculously proud of that costume. I won a hall cosplay award too. The rest is pretty much history. =)
All right these are work in progress pictures, just before bed time at that we believe, but we thought it would be a crime to deny Ninja Nation these gems!
Comics Ninja: What was your first cosplay convention experience like?
Claire: it was so much fun! As I mentioned, I got a hall cosplay award, and that was great for my first time ever cosplaying. It felt awesome to have people stopping me to ask for pictures.

Comics Ninja: What was the reaction of your family, friends and/or boyfriends at the time?
Claire: My parents were kind of…confused…by it. haha. They’re used to me being the strange, artistic child, and I think they’ve always wished I had more…”normal” interests. My friends were all about it, of course.
Comics Ninja: We note that you put a lot of time into working your body into excellent shape to pull off some of your costumes. What is your work-out routine like? Is this new or have you always worked out and been athletic?
Claire: I’m currently doing the “Insanity” routine, which is a crazy two-month, kick-your-ass-into-shape thing, to get ready for SDCC. I also do weight training, to build muscle for a more sexy superhero look. =) I wouldn’t call myself ‘athletic,’ I’m actually terrible at most sports. I never liked team stuff, but I was a dancer for 15 years and a fencer for 5. I had to quit all that when I went to college, and then I wasn’t working out at all…which, because of my body type, actually caused me to LOSE weight rather than gain it. But I’ve found that working out not only helps me look good in cosplay, but it makes me feel much better about myself and in general.
Comics Ninja: Amen. Your random question, better movie Zombieland or Fight Club? Why? Can you name the rules?
Claire: Oh man, that’s a tough one! I love them both, but cinematically I’d have to say Fight Club is the better film. Of course I can name the rules…but Rule no. 1 is I can’t talk about it. =P
