Welcome back Ninja Nation to part two of our feature and interview with Abby Dark Star, the March Cosplay Babe of the Month. Thank you for the wonderful response to part one and let’s get back to our interview here in part two.
Comics Ninja: What do you think of all of the attention you have gotten from the fanboys (and girls) on the Internet and at conventions?
Abby: Most of the time I’m very surprised. I suppose in my head, I’m still the dorky sixth grade girl with braces and glasses, her nose stuck in a book. I find it very flattering, but most of all I enjoy being the characters and interacting with fellow fans.
Comics Ninja: What is your best and worst fanboy experiences?
Abby: I had an experience at last years Dragon*Con, came down onto the floor in Poison Ivy. I was walking around looking for several friends and was grabbed quite rudely by two men. Good thing my boots have a very pointy heel. One of my favorite ‘fanboy’ experiences is in 2009 at the Poison Ivy/Harley Photo Shoot at Dragon*Con. We were taking group pictures and a little boy dressed as Batman was walking by. We all called out and he came over into my arms and took pictures with us. As he went to leave he hugged me tight. Kids are my favorite parts of conventions, the light in their eyes as they see you- make the hours of creation, wearing and numb feet worth it.
Comics Ninja: What has been your favorite costume so far and why?
Abby: I am split between two. My ‘usual’ Poison Ivy is my favorite. She was my first foray into costuming, and after several incarnations, the suit finally came out the way I had envisioned. The costume I’m most proud of is Arkham Asylum Poison Ivy. It was very, very important to me to get as accurate as possible. The amount of research that was poured into it, and the help of great people like Mike Schiffbauer (who did the sculpts), Nick Wolfe and Athena Zhe (who did the bodypainting) helped me bring the character to life. I was very proud of the costume!
Comics Ninja: What future costumes do you have in the planning stages?
Abby: Right now I’m working on Irene Adler from Sherlock Holmes, a Femme Indy, a Female Master Chief is also in the planning stages (I call her Mistress Chief). There is a list…oh there is a list! Haha!
Comics Ninja: If you could be any character in real life, who would it be and why?
Abby: Poison Ivy. I identify with her greatly and envy her connection to nature, and let’s face it- we need to start saving the Earth!
Comics Ninja: Any advice for fellow cosplayers planning to go to conventions dressed as their favorite characters in the future?
Abby: Find a character that you are passionate about, and go for it. Research, find out all about the character and their costume. Spend the time and create a costume you can be proud of- even if it is a slightly different interpretation. Be aware that once a person puts on a costume they are subject to scrutiny, both good and bad. Hold your head up and enjoy the fun. Also- if you are drinking, no matter what costume you are wearing, no. You cannot fly.
Comics Ninja: What else should the Ninja Nation know about you? What else would you like to pass along to the Ninjas?
Abby: I am a huge bibliophile and finishing my degree in History, British and Medieval to be exact. I play the piano and ride horses. In my spare time I take over small countries and make them watch Red vs Blue. My GPS is named Sheila and I fangirled over Peter Cullen at Botcon. I also have an unhealthy addiction to boots. In fact, most of the costumes I choose usually have really awesome boots.
All right Ninja Nation that wraps up our feature on Abby Dark Star, hope you enjoyed! Until our next feature we’ll leave you with a couple more great photos from Abby.
