Talho Yuki from Eureka 7

Welcome back Ninja Nation to Part Two of our feature on February’s Cosplay Babe of the Month, Giorgia Vecchini.  She has been gracious enough to conduct an interview with us and it turns out that not only is she beautiful but she is also pretty darned funny.

Comics Ninja (“C.N.”):Giorgia, thank you for joining us all the way from Vigasio, Italy (near Verona) it is an honor for the Ninja Nation to speak with one of our favorite cosplay models. Thank you for bringing our manga, anime and comic book fantasies to life! Now on with the questions.

From researching your background we noted that you have been into Japanese animation since you were a kid. Tell us about your early favorites and why Japanese animation?

Giorgia: Thank you for your kind introduction.  Well, my early favorites where mostly anime for girls like Heidi, Maho Tenshi Creamy Mami, Uruseiyatsura, but also Kimagure Orange Road and even something that was meant for boys like Saint Seiya.  As for your first question, I’ll answer with a question: how could you not love Japanese animation?

C.N.:True. What did your parents think of your fascination with anime as you grew up? Were they supportive? What did the other kids in the neighborhood think? Did this attract the boys or drive them away?

Giorgia:My parents thought I should have stopped reading “panga” (that’s how they mispronounced “manga”) and coming home from school with notices from the teacher that read “Giorgia must stop drawing Creamy everywhere” surely didn’t help.

I think my neighborhood regarded me as a resource because I could draw anime characters, so they asked for drawings of their favorites. Nowadays I am some sort of historical memory for them (meaning I’m the one they turn to when they can’t remember well something about comics and animation in general) and I’m even still known as “the Sailor” (referencing Sailormoon) to most of them :)   As for boys, I think they just didn’t care about my passion.

C.N.: Those foolish boys did not know what they were missing.  Anyway, moving on,  I noted that you were at the local Literature Faculty.  I assume that means you will be teaching some day.  Do you think it will help your students if you dress up in character from time to time?

Giorgia: Actually, at the moment I only teach for private lessons, but should I ever teach in a school I don’t think I will dress up in character for them.  They might be too distracted, so maybe it will be a better idea to keep my secret identity separated from my life as a teacher… just like Clark Kent and Superman :)

C.N.:You mentioned on your website that you’ve worked various jobs from convention hostess, bartender, airline ground attendant and…escort! For the benefit of the American fanboys currently going into cardiac arrest, please explain this last job a little further.

Giorgia: Please, don’t die, don’t faint ;)

It was only a part time job in which I had to attend to car conventions and escort visitors walking them to the car on display, and answering their questions about the car itself.  Is the temperature dropping now?

C.N.: Only slightly.  We noticed from your pictures that you have branched out beyond anime and manga embracing characters from American comic books such as Elektra and Wonder Woman. What current American comic books or characters do you enjoy and/or read?

Giorgia:There are a lot of American artists I like, but at the moment I would say that Witchblade is on top of my list and I’m working on the cosplay.

C.N.: Excellent.  Tell us about your favorite convention and convention experience.

Giorgia:There are a lot of conventions I like but two of them are on top of all the others because they are the two occasions in which cosplay can go beyond the close environment of a convention and reach “normal” people, widening its audience.

I’m talking about The Osu Parade in Nagoya, a parade among the city streets which precedes the World Cosplay Summit attended by a lot of people who stand on both sides of the parade itself, and Lucca Comics that, since 2006 takes place among the city streets in what has become a colorful carnival (or Halloween if you prefer) to which Lucca people even take their kids (in costume) to.

C.N.:What are your best and worst fanboy experiences?

Giorgia:Oh dear, how much time do we have? Seriously, there are some creepy persons who don’t seem to be able to live their lives and continuously stalk me on internet or talk at my back even to some of my best friends. But, let’s forget about these creepy persons, instead I want to talk to you about someone who I think is a very funny fan of mine.

He is a Japanese boy who loves Wonder Woman and my cosplay of Wonder Woman.  When I went to Japan he gave me a lot of presents and among these there was some sort of a photo novel he had shot using a lot of Barbie-like dolls dressed as Wonder Woman (which I think were meant to be me and my friends with whom I was visiting Japan).

Each photo was captioned with a text that was seemingly translated into Italian from Japanese using a software or a straight out of the dictionary search.  The final result was funny, fascinating, loveable and creepy at the same time.

C.N.: What else should the Ninja Nation to know about you? What are you currently working and is there anything you would like to promote?

Giorgia:At the moment I have a lot of projects going on. I’ve just finished shooting some shorts for the Gamestop’s webseries “Gamers” which you will find on their Italian website and I’m in the talk for something even bigger that is going to be broadcast on RAI (Italian State TV).

Meanwhile I’m studying to become a professional dubber and I’m still going on with my experience as a eurobeat singer under the protective wing of Domino and her GoGo’s music label.

And let’s not forget I’ve just started www.cosplayplanet.net, a new website that hosts a community, an extensive photo gallery of cosplay events from Italy and around the world, and a daily journal of news, interviews and reviews from the world of cosplay.

C.N.: Giorgia, thank you very much for the wonderful interview and we hope in the future, as you launch into new projects, you can share your new photos with us!  All right that’s a wrap Ninja Nation, we hope you have enjoyed Ms. Vecchini’s feature as much as we have.
