Ms. April, Christy Marie as Padme Amidala.
It’s April 1st but our Ms. Cosplay Babe of the Month for April is no joke. A fan favorite on both the Star Wars and Disney scene, Christy Marie hails from Southern California and brings the joy of Spring to the hearts of Ninja Nation. We will feature her wonderful photos and pictures over two posts. Please join us for part one today as well as the first half of her interview. Now, without further delay, let’s get to know Ms. Christy Marie.
Comics Ninja: First, a little background. Where are you from and where do you now call home?
Christy Marie: I was born in Orange County, California and I’ve lived here all my life. I absolutely love it here!

Comics Ninja: When did you first get into cosplay and why?
Christy Marie: I started cosplaying because it seemed like such a fun and creative way to express my passion for movies that I love. Growing up, I was a huge nerd! I loved comic books, video games, and animation. I was about 13 when I went to my first comic book convention – San Diego Comic-Con. The first few years, I went as a regular attendee, but then I started noticing people dressing up in costumes. It looked like a really fun thing to try!
Comics Ninja: What was your first cosplay experience like?
Christy Marie: It was a great experience! I was a complete novice my first year. I wore Princess Leia’s classic A New Hope costume. I changed in the bathroom at Comic-Con. I felt pretty self-conscious walking out in costume, but really excited at the same time! I remember a guy holding up a hand-held camcorder as I walked by, and then people started taking my picture! I got to meet all kinds of amazing people, including other Star Wars costumers. People would come up to me and start quoting lines and we’d banter back and forth. I’m a pretty quiet person in real life, but being in costume was a fun outlet for my personality!
Comics Ninja: What was the reaction of your family, friends and/or boyfriends at the time?
Christy Marie: My family was very accepting! They thought it was a little strange, but they didn’t stop supporting me for a second. And once they got to see my experiences in action, they understood why I loved wearing costumes! My mom even accompanied me to Celebration II in Indianapolis.
Comics Ninja: It seems that you have become the preeminent Slave Leia on the convention scene? Why that costume or character?
Christy Marie: I am a huge Star Wars fan, so my first few costumes were Princess Leia and Padme Amidala in various outfits. I preferred dressing up as Leia, because she was such a strong and fun character, but I liked Padme’s costume designs more than Leia’s. My favorite Leia costume was Slave Leia. It was very sexy and flattering to her figure. Although other people had worn it before, it was somewhat of a “forbidden” costume, something that a lot of people were too shy to wear. I’m not too shy when it comes to my body, so I decided to take the risk and wear it!
Comics Ninja: Thank you for that. Which of the Star Wars franchise is your favorite? Ours is The Empire Strikes Back followed closely by A New Hope in case you were dying to know.

Christy Marie as envisioned by artist J Scott Campbell. Yeah That’s right, that J Scott Campbell.
Christy Marie: Most definitely the Phantom Menace, because it was by far the most iconi—I’m just kidding! The Empire Strikes Back is my absolute favorite!

See, Christy wasn’t always as sweet as she appears to be.
Comics Ninja: Whew, you had us scared there for a second. We love your picture with George Lucas. Who initiated that photo? Anything memorable from meeting him?

Christy Marie: That photo was taken at the gala premiere of the Star Wars costume exhibit at FIDM in Los Angeles. They wanted some costume characters to be there for atmosphere. George Lucas was there, and I was SO lucky to get a picture with him! He put his arm around me and asked me, “So what do you do in real life?” I told him I was majoring in Psychology and he laughed and took the photo with me. I also met Trisha Biggar, the costume designer from the prequels.
All right folks that’s the end of Part one of our feature on April Cosplay Babe of The Month Christy Marie. Join us tomorrow for part two, more pictures and the rest of the interview. Until then, enjoy and we will leave you with another of our favorite, Slave Leia shots!
