From Andy over at Games Workshop:
I hope you’ll forgive my gushing, but War of The Ring: Battlehosts is awesome. Not only does it let you game with the coolest and most iconic Heroes and Warriors from The Lord of the Rings, but rewards you for doing so. Battlehosts have access to a whole host (we haven’t had a pun in a while) of new special rules and abilities, that make them far more powerful than the sum of their parts.
I’ve refought the battle of Helm’s Deep dozens of times since we started producing The Lord of the Rings rules and miniatures, and whether it’s been using the War of the Ring or Strategy Battle game rules, it has always been an exciting affair. But last night’s game, in which we used the battleshosts expansion, was by far and away the most enjoyable yet. I used Haldir’s Archers battlehost and the Standard of Lothlorien (an Elven Kingdoms Fortune), and Rob attacked my bold defenders with an Uruk-hai Siege Warriors battlehost, whose special rules gave all Rob’s formations +1 Fight value against enemy formations in defensible terrain (my whole army!). It was an epic fight, with my Elves narrowly defeating the Uruks. Battlehosts really lets you tailor your force and play through your favourite bits of The Lord of the Rings. Personally, I can’t think of a more exciting way to play War of the Ring.
One of my favourite things about the book is the inspiring picture that introduces each Faction. For me, they sum up the grandeur of War of the Ring and suggest all sorts of evocative scenario ideas.
All of the new stuff featured below is out tomorrow, but if you can’t make it down to your local Hobby Centre, you can order them here today and we’ll ship them to you on Monday.
You’ll need the War of The Ring: Battlehosts book to field the new battlehosts and use the new Faction specific Fortunes and Fates contained within it. Morgul Knights are the most powerful cavalry available to an Evil force, and can be formed into The Knights of Morgul battlehost, which can (among other rules and in addition to be rock-hard anyway) automatically pass At the Double! Rolls, and make Earth-shaking Charges on a roll of a 5 or 6 instead of a 6. The Knights of Dol Amroth are equally as ferocious but I’ll let you read all about them when you pick up the book.
