There have been a lot of changes in DC’s 52 title relaunch but one of the more jarring here in the lair has been the transformation of Amanda Waller, the head of the Suicide Squad, from behind the scenes secret government power-broker and black hat coordinator to what I guess is a runway model. Image above from The Beat. Frankly, she was an interesting character because for once we had a normal human imgage instead of the ridiculous fever dreamed impossible Barbie image that is any and every woman currently existing in comic books outside of Aunt May and I’m sure she’ll be getting a silicone update sometime soon.
For once we had a powerful, strong character that actually looked human and didn’t send young girls into a panic over their body image while making fanboys realize that not every woman is a size 1 with double D boobs kicking butt in high heels. What’s more the title took Harley Quinn, another truly interesting character, tarted her up another level or two and turned up her homicidal tendencies to level ten.
In the past she was a witness to and sometimes accomplice to the Joker’s murderous actions but now SHE is the murderer talking of piling up bodies of those she has murdered until the Joker notices her. This all seems to be part of an overarching theme in DC’s new relaunch. Specifically, reach out to the younger generation and a new audience of readers by using increased violence and sex appeal on top of the hyper level it was already at in comics. This may work, and we’re not prudes here in the lair, in fact we are Neanderthals at times, we just hope that they remember that good story, characterization and art trump gratuitous violence and sex inserted just for the purpose of gathering new readers in the short term.
