Please join us in welcoming Jessie Pridemore our May 2012, Cosplay Babe of the Month. Jessie joins us from New York City, a photographer by trade and a cosplayer on the side. She has been gracious enough to spend some time with us for her feature which will be in two parts due to the incredible number of outstanding cosplay photos. With that said, let’s get right to the interview with Ms. May.
Comics Ninja: Jessie, thank you for joining us today all the way from New York. We note that you are originally from New Orleans. Why don’t you take the opportunity to tell us how you ended up in New York and take let the Comics Ninja readers know a little bit more about yourself.
Jessie: It’s a bit of a journey. I lived in New Orleans for about 15 years. I was in the foster care system and when I was in my early teens, long term foster care was abolished. So when I was about 15, I was sent to live with my biological mother, who lives in Des Moines, Iowa. I spent my high school years there and when I was about 19, I moved in with my high school sweetheart in Kansas. That ended and I moved to Florida, thinking I’d enjoy the weather. Florida was awful and I only lived there for a short amount of time before moving in with a friend in NYV to pursue photography.
Comics Ninja: What first got you into cosplay?
Jessie: My birthday is on Halloween. My thirteenth birthday I was very dissatisfied with my costume choices and wanted to dress as Sailor Mercury, so my foster dad bought me the materials to make my costume for my birthday. The next year my uncle Dan took me to my first convention, Demicon, so that I could help him into his Boba Fett costume. The rest is history.
Comics Ninja: What is your favorite convention or event to attend?
Jessie: Anime Central is my favorite anime convention. It’s the one I’ve been going to the longest and I staff. It’s a large convention but still feels like a small convention. Dragon*Con is my favorite convention in general. It’s so laid back and you can cosplay literally anything and there will be at least 10 people there who that’s their favorite thing in the world.
Comics Ninja: Tell us a little bit about your interest in photography and modeling.
Jessie: Well photography is what I do for a living. I like capturing sides of people they don’t see very often. As far as modeling goes, I did it a little bit when I was younger but knew my limitations due to my height. I like being on both sides of the camera, but I like being behind it more.
Comics Ninja: What do you think of all of the attention you have gotten from the fanboys (and girls) on the internet and at conventions?
Jessie: I don’t think I really get that much. I don’t really wear the big attention grabbing outfits. I’m always appreciative of people enjoying my work. I put a lot of time and dedication into it. I’m kind of an awkward turtle though, so I feel like I don’t properly express myself at times.

Comics Ninja: What are your best and worst fanboy experiences at the conventions or events?
Jessie: I can’t say that I’ve ever had a BAD experience. I always get comments after events of people saying “Oh I saw you, but was too afraid to approach you.” So I don’t really feel like I meet my “fans” as much as I could. The funny part is, I’m probably more shy and awkward to meet them than they are. I just hide behind my boisterous self and loud mouth. Any time I walk to a cosplayer I really admire and they tell me they are a fan of my work, it always makes me feel really good. Even more so when people say I inspire them.
