”Comics industry remembers Joe Kubert, ‘a friend, a teacher, an influence and a giant”

In what was already a sad day for the comics industry, Sunday brought news that legendary artist, teacher, writer and editor Joe Kubert passed away.

“Kubert was a giant of our industry, a singular talent up there on the mountaintop with masters like Gil Kane, Will Eisner and Jack Kirby,” J.M. DeMatteis wrote on his blog. “His art was dynamic, powerful and, most of all, rich with humanity and emotional impact. Like Kirby, he was one of comics’ greatest cover artists. Like Eisner, Kubert got better with time and age (one look at his recent graphic novel, Yossel, more than proves that point): his work achieved a kind elegance and simplicity that made storytelling seem effortless, easy.”

In a lengthy remembrance, Mark Evanier shares a story from a mid-1970s San Diego Comic-Con:

Yahoo! Movies has premiered the first poster for Red Dawn, the long-delayed MGM remake of the 1984 Cold War classic.

Originally set for release in 2010 but shelved because of the studio’s financial problems, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki and Isabel Lucas as a group of small-town teens who band together to fight North Korean invaders (in the original, it was the Soviet Union with its Cuban and Nicaraguan allies; in the remake it was initially China, until executives realized that might create distribution problems).

Directed by Dan Bradley, Red Dawn opens Nov. 21.

Below you’ll find the sales estimates for comics and trade paperbacks sold in the direct market for July, 2012. The sales numbers below are estimates based on the information provided by Diamond Comics Distributors earlier this month. Sales estimates for June, 2012 can be found here.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind when reading this data. These numbers are just estimates for the sales through Diamond to direct market retailers. It does not include any sales outside of the Diamond channel such as newstands, book stores or overseas markets. Since the majority of habitual comic book readers are served through this sales channel, these numbers are a good indicator of the core sales trends at the retail level. While not all copies will sell to readers, each retailer is buying what they think they can sell so the trends at the retail level should be a close enough reflection of the sales trends at the reader level for the purposes of discussion. Meet the sexy new addition to American Horror Story's S2 asylum

After the success of American Horror Story‘s first season, the creators of the hit FX horror series have wasted no time ramping up for a larger second year —and the cast just keeps growing. The latest addition? Meet the sexy female member of “The Lovers.”

Actress Jenna Dewan (Step Up), who is probably best known for being the wife of Channing Tatum, has signed on to play one half of a couple dubbed “The Lovers,” acting opposite Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine.

The plot of the second season is being kept mostly under wraps, though we do know it’ll be set in the 1960s at an insane asylum. Apart from that, who knows what showrunner Ryan Murphy will cook up.

Dewan joins an already loaded cast, including Levine, Jessica Lange, James Cromwell, Joseph Fiennes, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, Zachary Quinto, Chloe Sevigny and Lizzie Brochere.

What do you think of the casting choice? Are you looking forward to seeing more of Mrs. Channing Tatum?

As you know, we have all been touched by the tragedy taking place at the Batman premier in Aurora, Colorado.  As many of you also know, we are local to the comic book and gaming scene here in Colorado.  While many emotions and thoughts have passed through our minds regarding the massacre, yesterday was a time for grief, bonding and honoring the memories of the victims.

Yesterday we joined with thousands of others in Aurora for an emotional vigil.  While we did not feel it appropriate to post our personal pictures, The Denver Post has given good coverage below.  Additionally, please stay tuned as we will be announcing our plans to work closely with Denver Comic Con to raise funds for the victim’s families.

AURORA — Gathered shoulder-to-shoulder, leaning forward on tiptoes, overflowing onto sidewalks and into parking lots, a crowd of thousands converged Sunday evening at the Aurora Municipal Center to stand as one.

At a vigil to honor the victims of the Century Aurora 16 theater shootings, the scenes in the crowd spoke to the respect of the moment.

Little girls carried bouquets of flowers. Small boys in scout uniforms stood self-consciously upright. Adults applauded when Aurora police officers walked by. Most had no personal reason to be there, other than to prove that Aurora — sprawling, diverse, complicated Aurora — is a community united following the tragedy.  Read more.
